U.S. Senator Sasse, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence who called for the U.S. to vaccinate more than one billion people around the world this year, issued the following statement regarding President Biden's announcement that 19 million American vaccines would be distributed by the U.N.-backed COVAX program.

"By leaning on COVAX, the Biden Administration is leading from behind. This is a squandered opportunity to demonstrate American leadership and put Beijing on its heels. The United States should be vaccinating the world, but this plan is too timid and too bureaucratic. The Chinese Communist Party is attaching strings to its garbage vaccines. The United States has the most effective vaccines, but this timid, bureaucratic response isn't just too slow -- it's keeping us from targeting relief to nations who are getting squeezed by Beijing. We should do better by delivering this aid ourselves -- it would be faster, more effective, and aligned with U.S. strategic interests."
