U.S. Senator Ben Sasse, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement after reports that China detained Xu Zhangrun, a prominent critic of Chairman Xi Jinping’s communist regime.

“Let’s get one thing clear: the Chinese Communist Party does not actually serve the Chinese people. When distinguished scholars like Xu Zhangrun go missing after demanding Xi’s government be accountable for the corruption and coverup that produced the coronavirus outbreak, it's a fact the Party serves Chairman Xi and his fragile ego. The pen and free thought are what Xi Jinping both hates and fears the most.”
