U.S. Senator Ben Sasse, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement after pro-democracy Hong Kong lawmakers were disqualified from holding office shortly after Beijing passed a bill that allowed Hong Kong’s government to unseat elected politicians deemed a threat to China’s national security.

"Chairman Xi’s reign of terror in Hong Kong has now gutted the remnant of the city’s elected democratic opposition. Xi cannot tolerate a political system in Hong Kong that is anything less than an unblemished rubber stamp for his despotic policies. Those continuing to fight for democracy in Hong Kong should know the free world stands with them."
