U.S. Senator Ben Sasse, a strong defender of the First Amendment, released the following statement after a Federal Court ruled that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio violated the Constitutional rights of New Yorkers by limiting religious worship services while allowing mass protests.

“Here’s the thing about fundamental rights in America: They’re yours no matter what — they’re not discretionary gifts from the government. While it’s true that we’ve had to take some extraordinary steps to beat this nasty virus, cracking down on worshippers while simultaneously encouraging tens of thousands of others to get together to protest is much worse than just bad policy. It creates a double standard that massively erodes public trust. These guys have revealed by their hypocrisy that public safety wasn’t their goal; instead, they were using this crisis to score points with their political base.”
